Suicide-Dream Baby Dream

I set up this blog at 3 AM after a few restless hours of trying to sleep. This was as good a soundtrack as I could ask for. It is a victory of simplicity. Particularly in a dark room late at night, the minimal synth line can be felt physically, occasionally punctuated and interrupted by percussive clicks. Alan Vega's lyrics largely consist of just the song title and  occasional half-spoken invocations. But his vocals give an important level of dynamism. At different points he sounds sexy, pleading, strung-out, and a combination of the three.
I almost always prefer studio versions of songs, but I love how the live version puts the main synth line firmly in the driver's seat. Plus, the hazy and hypnotic video enhances the song's dream-like quality.
